Tree Equity: What Is It and Why Fresno Needs It
March 23 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Do you know why Tree Fresno focuses on planting trees in areas of the Central Valley that lack sufficient tree canopy?
According to Earth Define, California’s urban tree canopy covers 19% of the state’s urban areas. But in many cities throughout the Valley, canopy coverage fails to reach 10%. In addition to the dearth of urban tree canopy between California cities, studies have revealed that there is also an unequal distribution of urban tree canopy between low and high-income neighborhoods. This fact has brought to the forefront a conversation around tree equity.
According to American Forests, “Trees—and their benefits—aren’t spread equally across cities. A map of tree cover in almost any American city is also a map of income and sometimes race. Simply put, lower-income neighborhoods usually don’t have as many trees.”
